How Long Does a Tooth Extraction Take?

Each year, hundreds of Peoria patients visit our doctors at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons to discuss tooth extractions. Whether they were referred to our practice by their general dentist, or they realized their problem could only be helped by a board-certified dental surgeon, our patients know they will receive high-quality care from the professionals at our practice.

As with every procedure performed at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. BuschDr. Otte, and Dr. Schroeder each employ only the latest technologies available when performing tooth extractions. Because of this, and their commitment to staying up to date with the most advanced techniques in oral surgery, they are able to provide patients with fast results and minimal discomfort.

Why Would You Need a Tooth Extraction?

First and foremost, our doctors do everything they can to preserve their patient’s original teeth by evaluating options for repair of damaged and decayed teeth. However, this isn’t always possible, and tooth extractions are sometimes required. If they determine that keeping original teeth will be too costly, too difficult, or simply isn’t possible due to the inability to repair the teeth, our doctors may recommend tooth extractions.

Patients in Peoria who have the following conditions may need tooth extractions:

  • A tooth or teeth that have been worn down or damaged to the point that they are not eligible for a crown or veneer
  • There is a tooth or teeth that are mispositioned or impacted
  • A tooth or teeth is fractured down the root or below the gum line
  • A tooth or teeth have caused infection or gum disease
  • A tooth or teeth are crowding neighboring teeth and causing misalignment

By performing tooth extractions, our doctors are able to improve the overall health of their patients and increase their comfort and oral aesthetics.

How Long Does a Tooth Extraction Take?

The length of the tooth extractions procedure will ultimately vary from patient to patient and will be determined based on the individual needs and oral health history of each patient. For instance, if your general dentist referred you to our doctors and they provided our practice with imaging and X-rays, you may be able to have your initial consultation over the phone instead of in-office, which will cut down on your overall treatment time.

However, if our doctors determine that your case is more complex, you will be asked to visit them in our Peoria office for an in-depth consultation, during which a treatment plan will be established.

When you visit Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons for your tooth extractions surgery, you can expect the following:

  • Your doctor will review the procedure and post-operative care instructions with you before beginning
  • You will be given IV sedation/general anesthesia, which will allow you to be comfortable throughout the surgery
  • Your doctor will carefully and precisely remove the teeth and place resorbable stitches to close the gums

For most patients, the entire tooth extractions procedure will take about an hour and a half, which includes check-in, preparation, and anesthesia recovery. However, if you require bone grafts or dental implants during the same procedure, your timeline will increase. If this is part of your treatment plan, our doctors will give you a more precise timeline depending on your needs.
